WAKAKAKAKAKA!!!! Been cheated or not? :Þ

Ok... let me intro to you all, her sur name is Nikon and her name is FM10. I bought it after my SPM, I went to work in a photoshop for few months, all my saving just to buy this camera. I was targeting to get FM2, but I can't affort to get it, so this FM10 is just nice to me. The Vivitar is a zoom lense (70mm - 300mm), it's a used lense and I bought it quite cheap that time. Sad to say that I stop taking photographs since digital rules the photography world now, somemore the cost to develope the negative (film) and printing is not cheap anymore. I still love analog system than the digital in terms of picture quality.

Alright, let me show you some of my babies... I think most of them I posted before in my previous post, but I post it again here...

My Babies:...

Using light painting technique, I did it in a dark room, the light at the outline was draw by LED lights, then use colour filters on my flashlight to make it more colour effects. Shuttle speed was set to 'B' and locked it with my remote cable.

Another light painting on my favorite poster in my room, Wayne Rainey my 500cc all time hero.

Night scene at Kek Lok Si in Penang during Chinese New Year.

Year 2003 new year celebration in Kuala Lumpur, this picture was taken at Wangsa Maju area, using my Vivitar zoom lense (70mm - 300mm).

Sunset scene at Teluk Air Tawar, Butterworth. Really miss this scene, I think the place developed already, can't get this scene anymore...

Waterfalls at Bukit Hijau, Kedah. Using slow shuttle speed to get the better water effects. I heard this place getting dirty, sigh... why our people like to dirty all nice places?

Morning scene at Ulu Yam, Selangor. Very refreshing moment that time, so I grabbed my wife and produced this baby.

A junk yard in a village house, the place also developed already, miss that old bicycle...

Backlighting of Fan Palm, I took it at my backyard. This picture I won the Sunday Style (NST) weekly photography contest, I got 10 rolls of Kodak ISO400 films for this weekly contest, below is the newspaper cutting... (see my full name... Ng Khai Hoong).

Band Of The Week - AC/DC

Jeng Jeng Jengggggg®... Holiday for festive season just over, these two days (Thursday & Friday) I was so lonely in my office, all still on leave for Hari Raya holiday and I'm alone in my office, so enjoy the moment, no body disturb me and I can switch on my Rock n Roll MP3s as loud as I can.

Alright, this weekend my pick for my favorite rock band is AC/DC. I started know this band since I was a small kid from my uncle, that time still using 'records' (turn-table) to listen, no cassette, no CD too. My uncle still keeps the record until now, just very hard to get the player and amp with 'phono' features. Let's listen to my favorite song of AC/DC... Back In Black, this song makes me know this band. Highway To Hell, really enjoying when driving on the highway...:P and the respect to all rockers... For Those About To Rock, We Salute You~~~.

AC/DC - For Those About To Rock

About AD/DC

AC/DC are a hard rock band formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1973 by brothers Angus and Malcolm Young. The band have sold over 150 million albums worldwide and over 68 million albums in the United States, making them one of the most successful hard rock acts ever. Their 1980 album, Back in Black, has sold 42 million units worldwide (21 million in the US alone), and is the second highest selling album of all time and the biggest selling album by any band. In its recording career, the band has had two distinctive lead singers; Bon Scott and then later, Brian Johnson. Thus, fans tend to divide its history into the "Bon Scott era" (1974—80), and the "Brian Johnson era" (1980—present).

From left to right: M. Young, Scott, A. Young, M. Evans, Rudd

Although the group is generally considered to be a pioneer of hard rock and Heavy metal music along with Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, the members have always referred to their music as "rock 'n' roll". The band also accept the description "hard rock" (they are ranked number 4 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock"), but they find the "metal" description offensive. At one point they were known as a punk band, which AC/DC also disagreed with.

History (sources from wikipedia)

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, brothers Angus, Malcolm and George Young moved, along with most of their family, to Sydney, Australia, in 1963, when they were all still young children. George began playing guitar first and became a member of Australia's most successful band during the 1960s - The Easybeats, who were the first local rock act to score an international hit ("Friday On My Mind" in 1966). Malcolm and Angus soon followed in his footsteps. Malcolm first played with a Newcastle, New South Wales band called The Velvet Underground (not to be confused with the New York based Velvet Underground, which featured Lou Reed).

In 1974, George Young was playing on an album by the Marcus Hook Roll Band, called Tales Of Old Granddaddy, when he introduced Angus and Malcolm to a recording studio for the first time, and invited them to contribute to the album

Angus Young

Bon Scott Era (1974-1980)

In September 1974, Dave Evans was replaced by Bon Scott, former lead vocalist with The Spektors (1964-66), The Valentines (1966-70) and Fraternity (1970-73). This signified the beginning of the band's international success. With Evans, they had recorded one single, "Can I Sit Next To You"/"Rockin' In The Parlour". "Can I Sit Next To You" was eventually re-recorded with Bon Scott under the title "Can I Sit Next To You Girl".

By January 1975, the Australian-only album entitled High Voltage was recorded, based on instrumental songs written by the Young brothers and lyrics written by Scott. Within a few months the line-up had stabilised around Scott, the Young brothers, Mark Evans (bass) and Phil Rudd (drums). Later that year, the band released the single, "It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)", which became their perennial rock anthem. It was included on their second album, T.N.T., again only released in Australia and New Zealand. The album also featured another classic, "High Voltage".

Between 1974 and 1978, aided by regular appearances on the nationally-broadcast TV pop music show, Molly Meldrum's Countdown, AC/DC became one of the most popular and successful acts in Australia.

Bon Scott

Bon Scott's death (1980)

Bon Scott died on 19 February, 1980 (see 1980 in music). He had passed out after a night of routine partying in London, and was left in a car owned by an acquaintance of his named Alistair Kinnear. The next day, Bon was found unconscious by Kinnear and immediately rushed to the King's College hospital in Camberwell, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Although common folklore cites pulmonary aspiration of vomit as the cause of his death, the official cause was listed as "Acute alcohol poisoning" and "Death by Misadventure".

There are many inconsistencies in the official story, which in recent years have led to many conspiracy theories, many involving heroin overdoses. Some think it was murder, and that Bon Scott was killed by fumes from the exhaust being redistributed into the car, and some think Kinnear didn't even exist. It should be noted, however, that Bon was asthmatic and the temperature was below freezing that morning.

Scott's family buried him in Fremantle, Western Australia, the area to which they emigrated when he was a child.

Brian Johnson era (1980-present)

With Johnson, the band completed the songwriting that was started while Bon Scott was still alive and began recording Back in Black at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas a few months after Scott's death. Back in Black, also produced by Lange, and became their biggest-selling album and a hard-rock landmark, featuring hits like; "Hell's Bells", "You Shook Me All Night Long" and the title track. Back in Black was certified platinum a year after its release and by 1997 it had sold 16 million copies in the U.S. alone.

Brian Johnson

The follow-up album, "For Those About to Rock We Salute You", released in 1981, also sold very well and was well received by critics. Two of the band's biggest hit singles to date were featured in this album, "Let's Get It Up", reaching #13 in the U.K., and the title track, "For Those About to Rock", reaching #15 on the U.K. charts. The band split with Lange for their self-produced 1983 album, Flick of the Switch in an effort to find the rawness and simplicity of their early albums.

Departure of Rudd (1983)

Amid rumours of alcoholism and drug-induced paranoia, drummer Phil Rudd's friendship with Malcolm Young was deteriorating. After a long period of unfriendliness, the two's dislike for each other grew so strong that, at one point, they got into a fight. Two hours later, Rudd was fired from the band.

Phil Rudd

Rudd was replaced by Simon Wright, after the band held an anonymous audition. With the new line-up, the band recorded and produced the less successful album, Flick of the Switch, which was was considered underdeveloped (AC/DC was voted as the eighth biggest disappointment of the year in the 1984 Kerrang!'s readers' poll). However, Flick of the Switch eventually reached No. 4 in the UK charts. Fly on the Wall, produced by the Young brothers in 1985, was also regarded as underdeveloped and directionless. A music concept video was also released, it featured the band at a bar, playing five of the album's ten songs and supplemented by a variety of goings-on, including an animated fly.

Simon Wright

In 1986, the group returned to the charts with the title track from Who Made Who, the soundtrack to Stephen King's film Maximum Overdrive. This album also included two new instrumentals along with previous hits such as "Hell's Bells" and "Ride On".

In February 1988, AC/DC were inducted into ARIA Hall of Fame.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction

During their induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2003, AC/DC performed "Highway To Hell" and "You Shook Me All Night Long" with guest vocals by Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, who inducted the band into the hall. Tyler also called the band's power chords, "the thunder from down under that gives you the second most powerful surge that can flow through your body."

Brian Johnson with Steven Tyler

ACDC Lane

On 1 October 2004 a central Melbourne thoroughfare, Corporation Lane, was officially renamed ACDC Lane in honour of the band (street names in the City of Melbourne cannot contain the "/" character). The lane is near Swanston Street, the location where, on the back of a truck, the band recorded their video for the 1975 hit "It's a Long Way to the Top". There is another street, in Leganés, Spain, which was named after the band in 2 March 2000, called 'Calle de AC/DC'. It is close to other streets named after Iron Maiden and Spanish hard rock star, Rosendo.

9 Weird Things

I kena 'tiak' (tagged) again! This time by Doctor Chen again! LOL... Luckily this tag is easy to do, now only got time to sit down and write about it. Anyway... since I got no idea what to blog, so this is the best entry for me to update, thanks Doctor Chen... you owe me Char Koay Teow and Tee Nya Kueh ok? Kekekeke...

Ok, never forget my trademark, let me plug-in my electric guitar with heavy metal sound effect... jeng jeng jenggggggggg®... here are 9 weird things about me:...

1) I'm a rocker, but I don't look like a rocker. I don't like to do any tattoo on my body, I keep short hair, I don't wear torn jeans, I don't makeup, I don't behave like a rocker too. If I play guitar I only play rock songs, but when I sing I only sing Jacky Cheung's song... how weird!

2) No Music No Life for me, I love rock n roll musics so much (60's - 90's rock only), but I'm not into heavy metal stuff. I do like Jazz, Blues, Folk, Country, abit of Pop... But I can't accept R&B, Hip-Hop, Rap, Trance, House, Techno, I'll suicide if I listen too much of it... weird enaugh or not?

3) I'm straight and hamsap (pervert), I like to watch sexy and pretty girls, I watch porno too... I like sex if I got chance, but too bad I never did before... Romance got la (with my ex). I don't simply touch a girl or take oppotunity to molest a girl... really weird!

4) I love to watch Formula 1 and MotoGP race so much since I was standard 1, but I don't do racing . I only race on bicycle before, my most serious injury was my bicycle accident, I almost lost my knee... but my motorcycle accident just only minor external injury... weird or not?

5) I only love to eat at food stalls and my mom's cook, I don't like to eat at high class restaurant, I know most people like to eat at nice restaurant, but I don't really enjoy it... weird!

6) I love to work or do something that can occupy my time, I don't like sit down do nothing and day dreaming, the more I dream the more depress I'll get, that's why I started blogging and read other blogs... what a weirdo!

7) I like to keep myself and my things in clean and tidy conditions, most of the guys are very messy on their on stuffs, but I don't like, I feel very uncomfortable... consider weird right?

8) I like to share ghost stories with friends, I can talk this topic from evening until next morning, I did that many times before with few of my friends. Most people don't believe it exist or scare to hear about it, but I do believe because I got my own experienced... scary weird!

9) I must keep myself active in sports, if not I'll gain weight very fast although I eat less. That's why I still love to play badminton, that's my only game I can play now since my ankle got problem that cause me can't play football anymore, sometimes I did jogging or gym, I also treat doing house work as my exercise too... weird weird weird!

Alright, that's all 9 weird things about myself. I don't want to tag anyone again because I don't know who to tag... who volunteer to do? You are very welcome to do it... hehehe.

Happy Back To Work!!!

*P/S.: since Iwan Sanchez complains that no body tag him before, so I decide to tag only him la... hehehe

Lastest person to tag is LP, she said she got alot weird things about herself, so let's see how weird she is... kekeke...

The Winner, The Champion, and The Farewell

Formula 1 season 2006 just over, the closing final race (Brazil, Interlagos) was one of the most historic moment for me in this century.

The Winner

Felipe Massa won the race on his home soil after 13 years long waited, the first for a Brazilian on home soil since the late Ayrton Senna won in 1993. The cheer from his own country crowd like Brazil won the FIFA World Cup.

Felipe Massa

The World Champion & Farewell to Team Renault

Fernando Alonso who took the chequered flag in second position and clinched his second straight title while Renault wrapped up the constructors’ championship.

Fernando Alonso

The Farewell

It was a very tough race for Michael Schumacher for his final Formula 1 racing career. He started very well until his left rear tyre deflated. After changed the new set of tyre he was down to 17th place, but end of the race he manage to climb to 4th place. What a solid drive for this greatest Formula 1 driver, he sets the fastest race record for the race too.

Farewell to Michael Schumacher by greatest footballer Pele

It was also the last race of Kimi Raikkonen for Team Mclaren, he will joins Team Ferrari next season to replace Michael Schumacher as his successor.

Farewell to Kimi Raikonen by Mclaren Boss Ron Dennis

My thought...

It's hard for me to accept the formation for next season (year), I started support Team Mclaren since 1988 when Senna-Prost these two greatest Formula 1 drivers in the history together in the team. Currently my favorite driver is Kimi Raikkonen, and he is leaving Mclaren to join Ferrari for the next season. The most least favorite driver for me is Fernando Alonso and he'll joins Team Mclaren for the next season. I don't know how to support the Kimi with my least favorite and how to support Mclaren with my least favorite driver?

Michael Schumacher & Kimi Raikkonen

Alright, Fernando Alonso is a great driver, but he won the 2 times world champion by luck. Last season (2005), there were a tight challenge between Kimi and Fernando, but Kimi always had the bad luck with the car's reliability. If not Kimi was the world champion without any doubt. This season (2006) also the same situation but with M.Schumacher and Fernando. The bad luck for M.Schumacher for the last 2 races blowed his 8th world championship title away.

Racing is racing, we have to consider the driver, the machine, the tyre, the team and the luck. If less one of it, you won't win the race. I just wondering why Fernando Alonso have such a good luck all the way? How long it will last for him? Why Kimi Raikkonen always have the bad luck?

Kimi Raikkonen in action

This season Mclaren really disappointed me with win-less record. The last time they were win-less was back to year 1996. This season their car really uncompetitive with Ferrari and Renault. They really lack of pace and yet the 'reliability' issue still can't solve it in since Mika Hakkinen was in the team.

Finally, I really wish Kimi Raikkonen all the best for his new team and hopefully he will wins the world champion title next season. He really got the skills and very cool during the race. For Mclaren, I hope they can win the constructors' championship title back.

Kimi Raikonen

Band Of The Week - Dire Straits

Hurayyyy~~~!!! Weekend coming! First of all I wanted to wish Happy Deepavali and Selamat Hari Raya to all of you. This week my classic rock band selection is Dire Straits.

I'm sure many of you never heard this band before, ok... this time I gonna put on more songs from Dire Straits, sure one of the song you will familiar with. First song is 'Sultans of Swing'... one of my favorite. Second song is 'Your Latest Trick'... this song I'm sure all of you heard before from a chinese TV series, they use the music as the theme song. Third song is 'Money For Nothing'... I like the part "money for nothing... chicks for free"... I wonder really is free or not?... LOL. Fourth is 'Brothers In Arms'... this song really touching, they dedicated this song to Nelson Mandela in a concert together with Eric Clapton.

Ok... just choose your selection and enjoy the music by clicking on 'Play'.

Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing

Dire Straits - Your Latest Trick (Live)

Dire Straits - Money for Nothing

Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms

Dire Straits was a British rock band, formed in 1977 by David Knopfler (guitar), his brother Mark Knopfler (guitar and vocals), John Illsley (bass), and Pick Withers (drums), and managed by Ed Bicknell. Although the band was formed in an era when punk rock reigned, Dire Straits worked within the conventions of classic rock, albeit with a stripped-down sound that appealed to modern audiences weary of the overproduced stadium rock of the 1970s (see 1970s in music). In their early days, Mark and David requested that pub owners turn down the amps so that patrons could converse while the band played - indicative of their unassuming demeanor. Despite this oddly self-effacing approach to rock and roll, Dire Straits soon became hugely successful with their first album going multi-platinum globally.

Dire Straits

History (source from wikipedia)

Dire Straits recorded and released their first, self-titled album in 1978 for £12,500, initially within the UK to little fanfare, but to number one platinum success in the rest of Europe and, soon after, the U.S. Later, re-released as a single, Sultans of Swing became an unlikely UK chart hit, making the top 10. The group's second album, Communiqué, followed in 1979, resulting in a typical situation of the time, Communiqué showing as number one in the German album charts with Dire Straits simultaneously at number 3. Both albums are characterised by a stripped-down sound. However, this would change with the following albums. The band's line-up would also change over the years, but Mark Knopfler and John Illsley still play together, the two last founding members.

The Brothers In Arms era

Brothers in Arms was released in 1985 and went on to become the biggest selling album in the UK of that year and a huge hit internationally. It spawned several chart singles, including the U.S. number one hit "Money for Nothing", which was the first video ever to be played on MTV in Britain. There were further personnel changes, with the addition of a second keyboardist, Guy Fletcher. Brothers in Arms also saw the departure of Hal Lindes from the band during the recording sessions. His place was taken by Jack Sonni, though Lindes was still credited as an official band member for the album's release, while Sonni was not. Terry Williams was also joined on drums by Omar Hakim: both are credited as band members for this release.

The 1985–86 world tour was phenomenally successful. While playing a thirteen-night residency at Wembley Arena, the band moved down the road to Wembley Stadium on the afternoon of 13th July 1985 to appear in Live Aid. Their set included "Money For Nothing" with Sting as guest vocalist. The tour ended at the Entertainment Centre in Sydney, Australia, where Dire Straits still holds the record for consecutive appearances (21 nights). The last show of this extended stay in Sydney was recorded and broadcast on Australian and New Zealand television, and is well known for the one-off calypso rendition of "So Far Away" and the band's impromptu attempt at the famous Australian folk song "Waltzing Matilda".

Dire Straits

After Brothers in Arms

After the Brothers in Arms tour ended in 1986, Dire Straits went on a lengthy hiatus and Mark Knopfler concentrated on solo projects and film soundtracks. Dire Straits regrouped for the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert in 1988, where they were joined for their set by Eric Clapton (who performed his hit "Wonderful Tonight" with the group). Also in 1988, drummer Terry Williams left the band.

After Mark Knopfler worked and toured with the Notting Hillbillies, Dire Straits regrouped in 1989. By this time the band comprised four key members: Knopfler, John Illsley, and keyboardists Alan Clark and Guy Fletcher. Accompanied by other part-time members or session musicians, including the highly respected American drummerorca Jeff Porcaro from Toto, the group began recording tracks for a new album. The result was the band's final original studio album, On Every Street, released in 1991, six years after the release of Brothers in Arms. A widely anticipated release, On Every Street met with mixed reviews and moderate success. It was regarded by some reviewers as an underwhelming follow up and didn't sell as well as its predecessor. The song "The Bug", taken from that album, contains backing vocals by Vince Gill who turned down an invitation to join the band full time.

Mark Knopfler

The 1991–1993 world tour that followed On Every Street was not as successful as the previous one of 1985–86. A live album, On the Night, released in 1993, documented that tour, in which Chris Whitten played drums.

Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler have sold in excess of 118 million albums to date.

Dire Straits... Simply the best classic rock band!

Happy Deepavali~~~
Selamat Hari Raya~~~

An Eventful Journey

This story begins with these four best friends... Wingz, LinPeh, Cocka and Aceone. One day, LinPeh get a 'kang tao' for a 'piaomei' in somewhere isolated village. So he asked other three of them to accompany him to that place to find the 'piaomei' (excuses to apply VISA). Since the road to the village is so off road, so they dicided to use dirt bike to travel into the village.

During the journey, they lost the way to find the 'piaomei', they missed a small junction and went into a very spooky place... Then they stopped and started the conversation:...

Wingz: Oi... tiu lor, I think we are lost!

Aceone: Really ah? I don't know lor... I just follow (blur blur)

Cocka: Yalah... I think we are lost, Oi!!! LinPeh, you show the correct way or not?

LinPeh: Tiu lor... I forgot the way already, like that how to find that 'piaomei'?

Then they try to look around surrounding...

Wingz: Oi!!!... I feel something wrong here la.

LinPeh: Wait!!! Let me check the address...

Cocka: Pssst!!! Can you guys heard something?

Aceone: What is that?

Suddenly... they heard a very weird footsteps coming towards their way... the sound getting nearer and nearer. They all very scared already...

Wingz: RUN!!!

Four of them quickly jump on their own bike and start the engine fly off like 'Mat Rempit'... Cocka and Aceone can't handle the bike and crashed, but they manage to pickup the bike and continue run away... but... LinPeh was stucked behind them can't move.

Finally three of them manage to get away from that place then they stop....

Wingz: Eh... where is LinPeh?

Aceone: Me too... (still shaking)

Wingz: Tiu la... we have to go back look for him. If anything 'tong kua tau fu' we all in trouble also la...

Then they went back to the place look for LinPeh... They saw LinPeh still stucked at the location with full accelerate his bike but can't move, they heard LinPeh was shouting...

LinPeh: KNN CCB MCH you all run away so fast! The GHOST grabs my bike and don't let me go la... please help me!!! HELP!!! (crying too)

Band Of The Week - Deep Purple

Yes!!! It's going to another weekend! As usual, this weekend my choice of classic rock band is... Deep Purple. I think most of you heard this band before. This band was my first rock band I listen to when I was just 3 or 4 years old. The song was 'Smoke On The Water'... I remember last time when my uncle took out his guitar, I'll requested to play this song for me, I really love the guitar riff until now. Alright... let's enjoy this song by clicking on the 'Play' and listen on it...

Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water

Deep Purple are an English hard rock band formed in London, England in 1968 . Along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, they are considered to be one of the pioneer contributors to the Heavy metal and the hard rock genre, although they have never seen themselves as a heavy metal band. To date, the band has sold over 100 million albums.

History (source from wikipedia)

The band Episode Six released several singles in the UK during the mid-sixties. It featured Ian Gillan on vocals, Graham Dimmock on guitar, Roger Glover on bass, Tony Lander on guitar, Sheila Carter on keyboards, and Harvey Shields on the drums. Despite extensive touring, they never had their big break..

In 1967, a band called The Flowerpot Men and their Garden was formed, formerly known as The Ivy League. It was concentrated on a trio of singers. The new name was clearly derived from the children's show The Flowerpot Men, with the obvious psychedelic-era puns on flower power and "pot". The band's most popular song was "Let's Go To San Francisco." Some listeners assumed that the song was a parody of Scott McKenzie's "If You're Going to San Francisco," but the band has denied this. It featured Tony Burrows, Neil Landon, Robin Shaw, and Pete Nelson on vocals, Ged Peck on guitar, Nick Simper on bass, Jon Lord on organ, and Carlo Little on drums. Jon Lord had formerly played in The Artwoods, Nick Simper had been with Screaming Lord Sutch's The Savages, where he also played with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore.

The Dawn of Purple

In October 1968, the group had tremendous success in the US (but not the UK) with a cover of Joe South's "Hush," taken from their debut album Shades of Deep Purple, and they were booked to support Cream on their Goodbye tour. However they were soon kicked off the tour, allegedly because they were upstaging the headlining act. The band's second album, The Book of Taliesyn, was released in the United States to coincide with this tour, although it would not be released in their home country until the following year. 1969 saw the release of their third album, Deep Purple, which contained a symphony orchestra on some tracks. After these three albums and extensive touring in the States, Rod Evans and Nick Simper were unceremoniously sacked, and replaced by vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover both ex-Episode Six. This would create the quintessential Deep Purple "Mark 2" lineup. Initially, this version of the band released a great single probably influenced by the then-popular stage musical "Hair", a cover of a Greenaway-Cook tune titled "Hallelujah", which flopped, and then the Concerto for Group and Orchestra, a three-movement epic composed by Lord and performed at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Malcolm Arnold. Together with Five Bridges by The Nice, it was one of the first collaborations between a rock band and an orchestra, although at the time, certain members of Purple (Blackmore especially) were less than happy at the group being tagged as "a group who played with orchestras" when actually what they had in mind was to develop the band into a much tighter, hard-rocking style.

Top of the World

Shortly after the orchestral release, the band began a hectic touring and recording schedule that was to see little respite for the next three years. Their first studio album of this period, released in mid-1970, was In Rock and contained concert staples Speed King, Into The Fire and Child in Time. The band also issued the UK Top Ten single Black Night. Blackmore's and Lord's guitar-keyboard interplay coupled with Ian Gillan's howling vocals and the solid rhythm section of Glover and Paice, now started to become instantly recognizable. A second album, the slightly more mellow and progressive Fireball (a favourite of Gillan's but not of Blackmore's), was issued in the summer of 1971, creating a number of favourites (Fireball, Demon's Eye, Fools and No One Came). The band also scored another chart hit with Strange Kind Of Woman. Together with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, Purple were laying the groundwork for what is now called heavy metal music, although at the time, the phrase was still to be coined.

During 1972, Deep Purple continued to tour and record at a rate that would be rare thirty years on, releasing Machine Head, an album that was due to be recorded at a casino in Montreux, using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio, but after a supposedly accidental fire during a Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention gig burned down the casino the album was actually recorded at the nearby Grand Hotel -- this incident famously inspiring the song Smoke on the Water. Gillan believes that he witnessed a man fire a flare gun into the ceiling during the concert. Continuing from where both previous albums left off, adding more boogie and funk influences, Machine Head has since remained the band's most classic album, creating a number of career-spanning stage favourites (Highway Star, Space Truckin', Lazy, Pictures Of Home, and Smoke on the Water). This album was followed a few months later by a live release, Made in Japan mostly recorded at three Japanese gigs- two in Osaka and one in Tokyo, it is today still one of rock music's most popular live concert recordings (although at the time it was perhaps seen as less important, as only Glover and Paice turned up to mix it).

Roger Glover

Glenn Hughes

The classic Purple Mk 2 line-up continued to work hard and record into 1973, releasing the album Who Do We Think We Are (1973), featuring the hit single Woman from Tokyo, (plus album favourites "Mary Long," "Smooth Dancer," and "Rat Bat Blue"), but tensions within the band were more noticeable than ever. The bad feelings culminated in Ian Gillan quitting the band after their second tour of Japan in the summer of 1973, and Roger Glover being pushed out with him. Their replacements were an unknown singer from northern England, David Coverdale, and bassist Glenn Hughes, formerly of Trapeze. This new line-up continued into 1974 with the heavy blues/rock album Burn, another highly successful release, which contained the concert staples Might Just Take Your Life, You Fool No One and Mistreated. Hughes and Coverdale added a funky R&B/soul element to the band's music, a sound that was even more apparent on the late 1974 release Stormbringer, besides the title track, the album created a number of favourites (Lady Double Dealer, The Gypsy and Soldier Of Fortune). Yet Blackmore was not happy with the results, and as a result left the band in 1975 to form his own band with Ronnie James Dio and Elf, called Rainbow.

With Blackmore's departure, Deep Purple was left to fill one of the biggest vacancies in rock music. In spite of this, the rest of the band refused to go down without a fight, and to the surprise of many long-time observers, actually announced a replacement for the "irreplaceable" Man in Black. His name was Tommy Bolin, and the arrival of the young American to Deep Purple was a reality.

It was Coverdale who had suggested auditioning Bolin. "He walked in, thin as a rake, his hair colored green, yellow, and blue with feathers in it. Slinking along beside him was this stunning Hawaiian girl in a crochet dress with nothing on underneath. He plugged into four Marshall 100-watt stacks and . . ." The job was his. Bolin had been a member of many now-forgotten mid-'60s bands - Denny & The Triumphs, American Standard, and Zephyr, which released three albums from '69-72. Before Purple, Bolin's best-known recordings were made as a gun-for-hire on Billy Cobham's 1973 jazz fusion album, Spectrum, and on The James Gang's "Bang" (1973) and "Miami" (1974). He had also jammed with such luminaries as Dr. John, Albert King, and Alphonse Mouzon and was busy working on his first solo album, "Teaser", when he accepted the invitation to make history as a member of the new Deep Purple.

The resulting album, "Come Taste the Band", was released in the US in October 1975. Despite mixed reviews, the collection revitalized the band once again, bringing a new, extreme funk edge to their hard rock sound, which contained the concert staples Gettin' Tighter, You Keep On Moving and Drifter. Bolin's influence was crucial, and with encouragement from Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale, the guitarist came up with much of the material. Later, when Bolin's own personal problems with drugs began to manifest, the consequences appeared in cancelled shows and missed cues, the writing was on the wall.

The end came on tour in Britain in March 1976 at the Liverpool Empire Theatre. David Coverdale reportedly walked off in tears and handed in his resignation,to which he was allegedly told there was no band to left to quit. The decision to pull the plug on Purple had been made some time before the last show by Lord and Paice, who hadn't told anyone else.It was all over. The break-up of Deep Purple was finally made public in July 1976.

Later, Bolin had just finished recording his second solo album, "Private Eyes", when, on December 4, 1976, the real tragedy struck. In Miami, during a tour supporting Jeff Beck, Bolin was found seemingly unconscious by his girlfriend. Unable to wake him, she hurriedly called paramedics, but it was too late. The official cause of death: multiple-drug intoxication. He was 25 years old.

Subsequently, most of the past members of Deep Purple went on to have considerable success in a number of other bands, including Rainbow, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath and Gillan. There were, however, a number of promoter-led attempts to get the band to reform, especially with the revival of the hard rock market in the late 70s/early 80s.

Ian Paice

The Reunions

In 1980, Rod Evans, along with a group of unknown musicians, toured under the banner of Deep Purple. As the only original member, and one little known to most fans, this band was instantly derided by press and fans as a fraud. The lineup performed concerts in Mexico and the USA before legal action was taken to deny them the use of the name. In retrospect, however tenuous the connection this band had to the name "Deep Purple", it at least kept the name alive and in the media, albeit briefly.

However, in April 1984, eight years after the demise of Deep Purple, a full-scale (and legal) reunion happened. It was announced on BBC radio's The Friday Rock Show that the "classic" early 70s line-up of Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord, and Paice was reforming and recording new material. The band signed a deal with Polydor in Europe and Mercury in North America. The album Perfect Strangers was released in October 1984, creating a number of favourites (Knockin' At Your Back Door, Under The Gun, Gypsy's Kiss and of course Perfect Strangers). The reunion tour followed, starting in Australia and winding its way across the world into Europe by the following summer. It was a tremendous success. The UK homecoming proved limited, as they elected to play just a single festival show at Knebworth (with main support from the Scorpions). The weather was famously bad but 80,000 turned up anyway.

The line-up recorded and toured The House of Blue Light in 1987, creating a number of modern era classics (Bad Attitude, The Unwritten Law, Dead Or Alive and Hard Lovin' Woman). This was followed by the live album Nobody's Perfect (1988) which was culled from several shows on this tour. In the UK a new version of "Hush" was released to mark 20 years of the band. In 1989, Ian Gillan was fired from the band, as his relations with Blackmore had soured, and their musical differences had widened too far. Gillan's replacement was former Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner. This line up recorded just one album, Slaves & Masters in 1990 (One of the favourite albums of Blackmore), and toured in support of it. Despite the renewed excellence of the band during this period, many fans were not pleased with Turner, preferring Gillan.

With the tour done, Turner was forced to go, as Lord, Paice, Glover wanted Gillan back in the fold. Blackmore relented and the classic line-up recorded The Battle Rages On in 1993, creating a number of favourites (Anya, Solitaire, Ramshackle Man and The Battle Rages On). During an artistically successful European tour during the fall of 1993, tensions between Gillan and Blackmore came to a head yet again. Blackmore walked out in November 1993, never to return and leaving the band in a fix. Joe Satriani was drafted in, so the live dates (in Japan) in December could be completed. Satriani stayed on for a European Summer tour in 1994, Satriani was asked to stay permanently but his record contract commitments prevented this. The band unanimously chose Dixie Dregs guitarist Steve Morse to become Blackmore's permanent successor.

Jon Lord

Don Airey

Revival

Steve Morse’s arrival thoroughly revitalised the band as he is cited one the best and most accomplished modern guitarists. In 1996 the band released the critically acclaimed Purpendicular, which brimmed with confidence, new ideas and great songs. Deep Purple enjoyed success throughout the rest of the 1990s, releasing the harder-sounding Abandon in 1998, and touring with renewed relish, playing a setlist which was probably more adventurous and eclectic than ever before. In 1999, Jon Lord, with the help of a fan who was also a musicologist and composer, painstakingly recreated the Concerto for Group and Orchestra, and it was once again performed at the Royal Albert Hall in September 1999, this time with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Paul Mann. The concert also featured songs from each member’s solo careers, as well as a short Deep Purple set, and the occasion was commemorated on the 2000 album In Concert with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Much of the next few years was spent on the road via constant touring. The group continued forward until 2002, when venerable founding member Jon Lord (who, along with Ian Paice, was the only member to be in all incarnations of the band) announced his amicable retirement from the band to pursue personal projects (especially orchestral work). Rock keyboard veteran Don Airey (Rainbow/Ozzy Osbourne), who had helped Deep Purple out when Lord was injured in 2001, joined the band. In 2003, Deep Purple released their first studio album in five years, the highly praised (but controversially titled) Bananas, and began touring in support of the album immediately. In July 2005 the band stole the show at the Live 8 concert in Park Place (Ontario) and, in October of the same year, released the album Rapture of the Deep. Although recorded in just a few weeks, this proved to be their most progressive and adventurous work for many years and was followed by yet another extensive world tour.

Today, Deep Purple steadfastly carries on in the studio and around the globe as one of history's most prolific, longest-lived, and hardest touring rock bands.
