Band Of The Week - Van Halen

Alright, my boring weekend is coming soon, it's time for my band of the week again, this weekend the band I want to intro to you all is Van Halen.

Let's listen some of my favorite tunes from Van Halen, I'll start from Runnin' With The Devil, one of their biggest hit. Next will be Can't Stop Lovin' You, my favorite rock love song. I think Jump will be very familiar to you all, it's another biggest hit from Van Halen. Finally, this song was voted #2 on Guitar World Magazine's 100 Greatest Guitar Solos, it is Eruption.

About Van Halen

Van Halen is an American hard rock band. In 1972, the Van Halen brothers formed a three-piece band were known as Mammoth, with Eddie Van Halen as lead vocalist and guitarist, Alex Van Halen on drums, and Mark Stone on bass. They rented a sound system from David Lee Roth, but decided they could save money by letting Roth and his P.A. system into the band. Michael Anthony was called over to David Lee Roth's father's basement (where the band rehearsed) to see how he compared. Anthony, the bassist and frontman of the band "Snake," had seen Mammoth performing at a festival. Eddie, Alex, and Anthony jammed late into the night and hired Anthony as the band's new bassist/backup vocalist.

They enjoyed immediate popularity and influence with the release of their debut album, Van Halen in 1978, and to date have selling more than 80 million albums worldwide and earning the band the Guinness Book of World Records title for the most number one hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock List. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Van Halen is #19 on the list of top selling artists of all time (having sold more than 56 million albums in the U.S.) and is one of only five rock groups that have had two albums sell more than 10 million copies in the U.S. The band and its best known former members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 12, 2007.

In addition to being recognized for artistic contributions and success, the band is known for the drama surrounding its lead singer spot. Although the instrumentalists have remained the same (Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen and until 2006, Michael Anthony), the band has recorded/toured with three different vocalists: David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone. Each departed (at least once) under cloudy circumstances. More recently Michael Anthony was replaced in the band by Eddie Van Halen's son Wolfgang, but this new lineup is not yet known to have performed or recorded.

Eddie Van Halen

Following their 2004 concert tour the band was on hiatus again until September 2006, when word that Wolfgang Van Halen was confirmed as a new member of the band replacing Michael Anthony on bass. Other than three new songs in 2004, the band has released no new material since their last album Van Halen III was released in 1998. After long speculation, in August 2007 it was finally confirmed that the band would do a tour with the Roth/Van Halen/Van Halen/Van Halen lineup in late 2007 across North America.

His solo in Eruption is simply out of this world. Amazing. I discover tapping technique for a first time thru this song, although I'm still suck at it.

I found this website to compare guitar strings, called Stringlinks.

They don’t sell anything; they just provide a way to compare prices side by side.

The site was created so guitar players could have an easy to use reference of guitar string venders, all in one place.

Just click on a Vender to compare string prices. A new window will open (to their “Strings” page) from each vender; so you don't lose you place.

Check it out at www.Stringlinks.blogspot.com

It’s pretty cool.

Hello Kenny. I get to know you from Nonnie's blog.

Now only I know you are from Penang! COOL! I'm an ex-Penang. My father born there and living till 20+ then he flied over the ocean to Brunei or maybe swimm?? Hehe bad me...

I born in Brunei whereas both my bro and sis are in Malaysia, one is Penang and another one is Limbang....west and east ah!

But I still miss Penang altho I never live there. 2 years ago, I went back and visit the place for the second time as my first time was 10+ years ago. Quite long....

I love the food there like "Lok Lok". Kinda like steamboat but not really. Using the stick to steam the food. Quite nice. In the end, I got all wet because it really hot during afternoon. Took alot of photos during that visit.

Oh ya I commented here because I wanna introduce a rock artist from Taiwan 杨培安 His voice is so powerful to sing rock song. I was attracted by him when he sang 我相信。I upload it in my blog. I can listen it whenever I'm writing my blog. COOL!

Hey did Eddie Van Halen beat his cancer? I know he was ill. Be cool to see three Van Halens perform together.

I saw them in 1984 with David Lee Roth in Germany. Eddie can make that guitar scream bruddah. Roth is a jerk though and he posed too much for me. Sammy Hager is so cool. I love the Red Rocker's voice. Too bad he hates flying.

Another great choice Kenny. I need to but that first album again. It is a classic.

I think Eddie Van Halen has beat his cancer, I saw a guitar magazine showing about him and re-produce his signature guitar. Thanks.
