Band Of The Week - Rush

This weekend my selection of classic rock band is Rush. This band contains only three great musicians but their music works are far better than any other bands. I just started learn and accepted their music recently after I crazy into another progressive rock band Dream Theater. As usual let's enjoy some of their famous musics works.

About Rush (from wikipedia)

Rush is a Canadian rock band comprising bassist, keyboardist, and vocalist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer and lyricist Neil Peart. Rush was formed in the summer of 1968, in Willowdale, Ontario by Lifeson, Lee, and John Rutsey. Peart replaced Rutsey on drums in July 1974, two weeks before the group's first U.S. tour, to complete the present lineup. Since the release of the band's self-titled debut album in 1974 Rush has become known for the instrumental virtuosity of its members, complex compositions, and eclectic lyrical motifs drawing heavily on science fiction, fantasy, and philosophy, as well as addressing humanitarian/environmental concerns.

Rush in 1974

Musically, Rush has changed its style dramatically over the years, beginning in the vein of blues-inspired heavy metal on their eponymous debut to styles encompassing hard rock, progressive rock, a period dominated by synthesizers and, more recently, modern rock. Rush's three decades of continued success under the lineup of Lee, Lifeson, and Peart have earned the band the respect of their musical peers. Rush has influenced various modern artists such as Metallica, The Smashing Pumpkins and Primus, as well as many notable progressive metal bands such as Dream Theater and Symphony X.

Rush in 1979

Rush has been awarded several Juno Awards and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1994. Over the course of their career, the individual members of Rush have been recognized as some of the most proficient players on their respective instruments with each member winning several awards in magazine readers' polls. As a whole, Rush boasts 23 gold records and 14 platinum (3 multi-platinum) records, making them one of the best-selling rock bands in history. These statistics place Rush fifth behind The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, KISS and Aerosmith for the most consecutive gold and platinum albums by a rock band. Rush ranks 78th in U.S. album sales according the RIAA with sales of 24.5 million units.

Neil Peart

Peart is widely regarded by music fans, drummers, and fellow musicians as one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock, this high esteem continuing today as it has throughout his playing career. He is also regarded as one of the finest practitioners of the in-concert drum solo.

Neil Peart
Geddy Lee

Apart from prolific writing, musical influence, and instrumental prowess, Geddy Lee's high-register vocal style has always been a main signature of the band — and often a focal point for criticism, especially during the early years of Rush's career when Lee's vocals were high-pitched, with a strong likeness to British hard-rock singer Robert Plant. In fact, his voice is often described as a "wail". Nevertheless, Lee's voice has softened significantly over the years and still remains distinctive. His instrumental abilities, on the other hand, are rarely criticized. An award-winning musician, Lee's style, technique, and virtuosity on the bass guitar have proven very influential in the rock and heavy metal genres, inspiring such players as Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, John Myung of Dream Theater, Les Claypool of Primus, and the late Cliff Burton of Metallica.

Alex Lifeson

Instrumentally, Lifeson is regarded as a master guitarist, a pioneer of electronic effects and chord structures. During his adolescent years, he was influenced primarily by Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page.

You hit the nail on the head Kenny. These three guys put out more sound than some four or five piece bands. I mean Geddy Lee can play the bass guitar and keyboards at the same time. Really talents. I love his voice. So powderful and unique. And Niel Peart's lyrics are as witty as anybody out there. The only drummer that I have seen that could outplay him was the late John Bonham of Led Zeppelin.

I had the pleasure of seeing Rush three times in concert. Once in Frankfurt in 1978, then in Tucson, AZ in 1980, and in Heidelberg 1983. Heidelberg was my favorite show as I was close enough to reach out and touch Alex Lifeson if I had wanted. Wish I could have caught one of his guitar picks.

You know the funniest thing Kenny. The first time I saw Rush on TV I did not like them. I thought they were Led Zeppelin wannabes. But they were promoting the first album and Neal Peart had not added his lyrical wit to that album since he did not arrive until album two. Glad I gave em a second chance. And I would not mind to see them in concert once again.

Rush Rocks!!!

Yeah, three of them are truly great musician. Geddy Lee really a talented musician, Neil Peart is really a greatest drummer I ever seen together with late John Bonham.

Oh man! You have seen their concert three times?! I wish I can watch it at least once, but too bad it won't happen in Malaysia. It will be great if you got Alex Lifeson's guitar pick.

The 1st time I listen to Rush, I was confused with it, after I crazy about Dream Theater, then I only know they are actually copy the concept of Rush, Pink FLoyd, Iron Maiden and more... So I started learn to listen to Rush, finally I love this band.

Gotcha!!! wa tiao ti post the band lu tak tau one... kekeke
