Mega Project - SMART Tunnel

How many of you heard about this SMART Project before? I think those who living or always traveling in Kuala Lumpur will know a little bit of it. SMART is stand for 'Stormwater Management And Road Tunnel'.

I visited this project last year with different occasions. This project implemented by Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia and estimate will complete by middle of year 2007.

The function of SMART Tunnel is to divert flood discharges from just below the Sg Klang/Sg Ampang confluence into the Holding Basin (Kg Berembang). A multiple-bay bell mouth Intake Structure diverts the flood discharge from the holding basin into bypass tunnel. The stormwater bypass tunnel of about 9.7 km in length conveys the flood flows to the Storage Pond (Taman Desa).

SMART Tunnel Concepts

A double decked motorway within the bypass for a length of approximately 3 km starts near Kg Pandan roundabout and ends near the Jalan Istana Interchange at Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Highway.

Model of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)

Actual TBM on site

Ready to bore

After bored... It looks small from top

When I went down, I was... WOW!!!

Construction of multiple-bay

View inside the tunnel

At the back of TBM

I was walking almost 2 km inside the tunnel then only met the TBM. The feeling really different if we walk at the open space, I felt quite difficult to breath because of confine space inside the tunnel, the air flow is very limited.

Anyway, during the construction of tunnel, females are not allow to enter the tunnel, I don't know why, it not only apply at here but whole world too! They explained to me it's like some kind of jinx will happen if female go into the tunnel during the construction going on.

Posing on TBM...

Am I look like Malaysia version of Phuah Chu Kang (PCK)? With yellow safety boots and safety helmet. LOL...

well i hope you guys got your drain volume computations right your tunnels looks pretty small or that wouldn't be smart at all..by the way when in hell will you guys finish that turtle project when i first came to malaysia 5 yrs ago you guys were already digging at the kampung pandan round about..HELLO its the last leg of 2006 and you guys have not finished digging yet....and before i forget have you guys or your so called smart engineers figure out where your drain basin is going to be? coz all you fellows will just realize it when its all done up...

i hope you guys have better foresight than those who planned your putra line they never considered the increase of commuters thats why they only place to box cars hahahahaha....boo boo boo

Make sure it won't over flow and flooded on the road. And make sure it won't crack like the MRR2. My tax payer money there you know!! hehehe.

It still looks too small for two levels of traffic. Unless you forbid trucks maybe.
Still I don't wanna go in there during a flood.

thanks for dropping by and the comment...

Well, I'm not involve in this project at all. I do not know much about it. As I know the engineers who operate it all are foreigners. As we know KL is a land of lime stone, there are lots of cavities underground that we don't know, that's why lots of problems happen and it delayed a little bit. The initial schedule to complete this project was end of 2006 and will start operate middle or year 2007.

Maybe all of you will think this project is a wastage of public money. I agree with it too, I don't really agree to build this tunnel to solve the flood problems in KL city. But... look at this way, where got enough land to build more retention ponds to hold the rain water? Who did approved all the 'unplanned' development? Who polluted the rivers with all the rubbish?

Commuters? Hello... I'm totally not related with it.

[aceone]
That's out of my field... I just show the tunnel.

[simple american]
it only for light vehicles to use it. The diameter is equal to 3 storey height building. During flood they r not allow any cars to use it, the 2 decks of road tunnel will be closed and allow the flood water to flow into it.

[sasha]
y cannot? It already showed on Discovery Channel months ago. Don't ask me why no women are allow to go in during construction, that's their believe even for Mat Salleh. Last time Queen Elizabeth wanna visit one of the tunnel construction in Europe, but she was not allow to enter. They pantang it coz it may happen something disaster.

[tonixe]
haiyah... my blog is for crapping ma... so anything also can post up. Blogger party in the tunnel? LOL... I'll be the 1st person not to join.

Kenny Ng said...

[mr.goober]
It has 3 level decks, bottom is for water, the other 2 decks are for traffic. When heavy rain happens, both traffic decks will be closed and let water to flow. Accident? it has emergency exit every 200m.

[ikanbilis]
hahaha... i wish i could :P

[pisang]
it's 1st in the world using this concept.

[pink cotton]
yah... no females during construction only, after can.

Really ah? kekeke, ok... i gonna be Malaysian PCK :P
