Black Sabbath are an English heavy metal band from Birmingham, England. The original band line up of Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Terence "Geezer" Butler (bass), and Bill Ward (drums) is the same as the current line up (2006) although there have been shifts of personnel in between.

Black Sabbath remains a dominant influence in the genre they helped create. VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock ranks them second, behind Led Zeppelin.

History (source from wikipedia)

Black Sabbath formed in Birmingham, England in 1968 under the name Polka Tulk Blues Band (soon shortened to "Polka Tulk"), and later Earth, playing blues rock and hard rock.

Black Sabbath has a unique sound that emerged from diverse influences. Iommi was greatly influenced both by Hank Marvin's playing on Cliff Richard and the Shadows' heavy-guitar based recordings and by jazz guitar, particularly that of Django Reinhardt. Tony Iommi left Earth/Black Sabbath for a short time to tour with Jethro Tull and is seen playing with Jethro Tull on the rolling stones rock N roll circus. Ward has also expressed a fondness for jazz music, especially drummers like Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa. Geezer Butler cites bassist/vocalist Jack Bruce of British blues band Cream as a major influence on him: “He was the first player I ever saw who bent the strings and played the bass as a totally independent instrument”. Early incarnations of Black Sabbath merged elements of blues, jazz, and rock and paid their dues playing cover versions of songs by heavy rock acts including Jimi Hendrix, Blue Cheer, and the previously mentioned Cream. Osbourne says he was deeply influenced by The Beatles and his favourite album of all time is Revolver.

Trivia

After repeatedly being passed over by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since becoming eligible in 1997, Ozzy Osbourne famously demanded that Black Sabbath be removed from consideration for the institution. In 1999, Osbourne said after Black Sabbath was passed over their second year of eligibility, "Just take our name off the list. Save the ink." His basis for this position was that because the fans did not select the members, it was "totally irrelevant". The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ignored this request and Black Sabbath was finally inducted by Metallica members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich on March 13, 2006.

Balck sabbath was in spore back in the mid 90s//i cant remb who was the singer back then.

Crazy train was ozzy 's solo effort right? I know that skid row band did a cover of it...sebastain bach 's vocals was good on that one...singing in an octave much higher than OZZY...

DUDE..so correction man..i last heard BS is going to record an album with that James Dio ( from the band DIO ) guy...Ozzy is no loger in BS

I like the HEADLESS CROSS album in 1989..with Cozy Powell ( a dead meat now ) on drums..

BUT MY ALL TIME FAV SONG FROM BS IS..."WAR PIGS".

aaahhhhh....
crazy train was in the album blizzard of ozz not because ozzy was going solo but he was fired from black sabbath... he was replaced by ronnie james dio for 2 albums, 1 studio, 1 live..
was it live evil?... cant remember..

anyway, this is what i think about black sabbath and ozzy...

sabbath's music to me is tony iommi's music... he created the riffs which defines sabbath and ozzy wrote great lyrics which brings realism to the songs...

when u listen to ozzy's solo albums, he has a more, shall we say, happy mood to it... listen to crazy train, flying high again etc etc...
ozzy have a great gift of choosing the right guitarist at the right time..
randy rhodes was flamboyant and such was his playing defies 80's arena rock.. when he passed away, it was jake e. lee ...complete with hair mouse and lipstick but still great guitar playing... ozzy went through a few more guitar players but were pale compared to randy... hance, the albums and songs weren't as strong as when he was with randy and tony..

then came zakk wylde...

here, ozzy was able to blend the heaviness of sabbath and the flair of randy with the muscle of 90's metal...

ozzy, great singer, but even better at choosing guitarists!

cheers bro..

Although I listen to 90's rock, but I acknowledge that Black Sabbath is an important classic rock band. No Black Sabbath = No heavy metal.
